Hacking for a greener world

21 June 2023

Teams from two Singapore institutions shared ideas at GGEF’s sustainability-inspired hackathon

The SDG Open Hack is an atypical hackathon that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship, and cultivates leadership, creativity and teamwork.

The event is organised by GGEF, a prominent Singapore sustainability not-for-profit organisation. It’s held in partnership with United Nations for Training and Research (UNITAR), Open Geneva, University of Geneva, Singapore universities and corporate partners.

The competition is open to university students currently studying in Singapore. It encourages participants from different universities and disciplines to form a team to solve societal and environmental challenges, by way of learning 17 UN SDGs.

A 400-strong effort

The event kicked off with more than 400 participants joining a 24-hour hackathon 13 and 14 May 2023. It culminated with the SDG Open Hack Grand Finale on 15 July 2023.

Among the judges was Stephen Barry, Managing Director of Stepworks, a Hong Kong-based branding agency. Stepworks recently opened an office in Singapore and has long been a friend and partner to event organiser GGEF.
